Aims and Scope. International Journal of Toxicology,
formerly titled Journal of the American College of Toxicology, is the College’s
sole official journal. Publishing fully refereed papers covering the entire
field of toxicology, the International Journal of Toxicology addresses
previously unpublished findings and assessments of the toxicity hazards of
industrial chemicals, pharmaceutical agents, environmental contaminants, and
other entities, while exploring their mechanisms of action relevant to human
health. Each issue informs the reader on the full range of critical issues in
toxicology, including:
-
mechanisms of toxicity
-
risk assessment and safety evaluation
-
carcinogenicity
-
reproductive and genetic toxicology
-
epidemiology and clinical toxicology
-
new approaches to toxicological testing
-
alternatives to animal testing
-
safety and regulatory toxicology
The journal is read by both basic and clinical
toxicologists; pharmacologists and pharmaceutical scientists; and researchers
in the cosmetics industry, drug companies, and regulatory agencies.
Submission of Manuscripts. The original and three photocopies of each
manuscript should be submitted, along with a $50 manuscript handling fee
(payable to the American College of Toxicology), to the Editor-in-Chief.
A completed and duly signed transfer of copyright form must accompany the submission as well.

Authors are strongly encouraged to submit
manuscripts electronically to the editor-in-chief. The file should be prepared
using MS Word or WordPerfect and should be clearly labeled with the authors’
names, file name, software program, and the beginning date of submission. A
hardcopy printout that exactly matches the file must be supplied. Each
manuscript must be accompanied by a cover letter that should include a
statement that it has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been
submitted simultaneously for publication. The cover letter must include a
separate statement disclosing the source of grant money, or unequivocally state
that none of the authors have any conflicting interest with the submission of
the manuscript. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce
copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement
for the transfer of copyright to the American College of Toxicology.
The transfer of copyright agreement form is
located in the journal. A completed and duly signed form should accompany the
manuscript at the time of submission, regardless of whether the manuscript has
been submitted electronically or by mail. All accepted manuscripts, artwork,
and photographs become the property of the publisher.
The manuscript should be typewritten,
double-spaced, with one inch margins on all sides. The pages should be numbered
consecutively throughout the paper. All titles should contain 6 to 12 words.
Please provide a short version of the title suitable for the running head, not
exceeding 50 character spaces. Each article should be summarized in an abstract
of no more that 250 words. Abbreviations, diagrams, and reference to the text
within the abstract should not be used.
To ensure the manuscripts are style-compliant,
consult the latest issue of the journal for stylistic relevant issues.
The first page of the manuscript should contain
the following: article title, the names and affiliations of all authors, an
abbreviated form of the title, and the name, complete mailing address,
telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address of the person to whom all
correspondence should be sent. The remaining text of the manuscript should be
double-spaced. The second page should contain an abstract followed by keywords
listed alphabetically.
Original research articles should contain the
following additional sections: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and
Discussion. Review articles will also have these sections, although some
variations may occur. Any study involving the use of animals should briefly
describe the procedures employed for their humane care and use as promulgated
by the ACT, NIH, or other regulatory guidelines.
References. References should be alphabetized by author and compiled in a
separate section at the end of the manuscript. Please cite text by author and
year. Reference style should follow The Chicago Manual of Style, 15th ed.,
e.g.:
Journal Article: Buters, J. T., J. Doehmer, and F. J. Gonzales. 1999.
Cytochrone P450-null mice. Drug Metab. Rev. 31: 437-447.
Book: Hodgson, E., and R.C. Smart. 2001. Introduction to
Biochemical Toxicology, New York: John Wiley & Sons.
Article in a Book: Mehendale, H. M. 2001. Application of
isolated organ techniques in toxicology. In Principles and Methods of
Toxicology, ed. A. W. Hayes, 1529-1584, Philadelphia: Taylor & Francis.
Illustrations. Illustrations such as, line drawings,
halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc., should be clean originals or digital
files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and
should adhere to the following guidelines:
-
300 dpi or higher
-
sized to fit on journal page
-
EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only
-
submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files
Color illustrations will be considered for
publication; however, the author will be required to incur the full cost
involved with the printing and publication. The charge for the first page with
color is $900.00. The next three pages with color are $450.00 each. A custom
quote will be provided for color art totaling more than 4 journal pages.
Good-quality color prints or files should be provided in their final size. The
publisher has the right to refuse publication of color prints deemed
unacceptable.
Tables and Figures. Tables and figures should not be embedded
in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short
descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend, and any
footnotes suitably identified below. It is necessary that all units are
included. Figures should be completely labeled, including any necessary size
reduction. Figure legends should be typed and double-spaced on a separate
sheet. All original figures should be clearly marked in pencil on the reverse
side with the number, author’s name, and top edge.
Offprints. An offprint order form will accompany proofs. It
should be completed and returned with proofs.
Conflict of Interest Statement. Authors are required to
disclose any possible conflicts of interest. Sufficient disclosure, for authors
submitting their manuscripts, may be constituted by divulging their affiliation
as members of industrial or government organizations. Academic, nonprofit,
consulting, advocacy, and all other authors are asked to disclose, under the
subheading Acknowledgement, all sources of financial and material support for
studies and manuscripts submitted.
Guidelines for Ethical Publications. A policy statement and
guidelines for ethical publications is published in the first issue of the
journal every volume year.
